Emergency contraception
When it is used:
If unprotected sex when pregnancy is undesirable and
  •  there were not used methods of contraception (including rape)
  •  when method was used unsuccessfully (condom was broken or slipped of)
  •  improper use of method (when pills are got not regularly)
Existing methods of emergency contraception
  • progestin pills
  • combined estrogen-gestagenic pills
  • cooper containing intrauterine devices (IUDs)
The mechanism of action of emergency contraception
  • There is more than one method of action
  • The main mechanism of action is suspension of ovulation or its complete absence
  • when the method is used during the first half of the menstrual cycle, before ovulation
  • Other methods have not been fully defined, although it is perceived that:
  • there is an influence on the function of the yellow body
    thickening of cervical mucous
    prevents movement of eggs and sperm into fallopian tubes
    not effective fertilization
    changes in endometrium (is not confirmed by modern researches)
  • Emergency contraception does not cause termination of an existing pregnancy
  • The faster method will be used after unprotected intercourse the greater its effectiveness
